New Poem by Evelyn Cole: Expressive Moments

Expressive Moments

Late at night
after a bedtime nap
when the mysteries of love
hit the fan
and spray toothpaste
across the sink,
I marvel at the variety
of ways we express it

My grandson loves me
He growls and curses
my ping pong skill

His mother, my daughter
stays true to herself
and smiles at me

His father, my son,
thirty years beyond “in-law,”
underlines our connection
with a touch

My old husband
hugs me in bed
and whispers his love

Sometimes I have trouble
swallowing
