Christmas List

December 20th, 2013 Evelyn Cole

Oompa—oompa—oompa

the band plays at the widowers’

and widows’ annual Christmas dinner

at the Madonna Inn

The beat is as old

as the dancers

except for one hefty woman

squeezed into a low-cut red dress

over black-laced legs

who steals the floor

We steal away home

to make a Christmas list

of things to do tomorrow:

hang lights on a dead bush

place candles in the windows

dig out our holiday stash

sort and decorate

When you’re more than eighty

you no longer dance

to oompa—oompa

and you miss old friends

who died or forgot to come

We go home at 8:30

light a fire

make that Christmas list

kiss  then kiss again

It’s the most we can do

after a night on the town
