New Poem by Evelyn Cole called Doubtful

July 4th, 2014 Evelyn Cole

During the day I tried to enter
three different conversations
in vain

At sunset, I sat out back
and had a conversation
with my grand cat and dog
left alone and lonely

We eavesdropped on a long
discussion among several quail
in the orange tree—
settling in for the night—
arguing about who slept where

The cat sat still, mindful, wary
The dog hovered beside me
asking for reassurance
until the quail grew quiet

I sent the dog home to bed,
the cat to hunt gophers, then
went inside, asked my sleeping husband
if he still loved me
