New poem: Friction Leads to Fiction

December 29th, 2014 Evelyn Cole

writes a poet in our workshop
Some questioned that line
but I stole it and took it home
for there is no fiction without friction
evidenced in every novel sold
or movie ad watched

Non-fiction attempts logic
by selecting a few facts
out of a barrel of ideas

Memoirs are mainly fiction
a few strings pulled
from a basket of yarn

If friction is required
to create a plot
is it part of our DNA?
Religious and tribal wars
are a given
like family quarrels

Our egos do us in
Consider Vladimir Putin
Friction feeds the muscles
he flexes at the egos of leaders
around the world

All of which might
make for another
blockbuster novel
that I can’t write
for I’ve spent my life
trying to avoid
